NATIONAL GAS EMERGENCY SERVICE

The National Gas Emergency Service operates the 24-hour freephone national gas emergency service. If you are at all concerned about a gas leak, you should call 0800 111 999. Do not call Gazprom Marketing & Trading Retail.

The call is free. It is operated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All calls are recorded and may be monitored.

You will be put through to a trained operator, who will log all important details, and will then be dispatched to an engineer. It is important that you give accurate information, so that the local transporter can offer the right gas safety advice.

Gas transporters aim to attend all uncontrolled escapes within one hour, and all controlled gas escapes within two hours. A controlled gas escape is one where the person reporting it has confirmed that the gas emergency control valve serving the premises has been turned off and the smell of gas has gone.

The transporter’s engineers will always ‘make safe’ when called to a suspected gas escape. However the terms of its licence does not cover repairs to appliances or installation of pipe-work, which cannot be competed within 30 minutes.

The information given above applies regardless of who your gas supplier is.
